Autism Programming

The development of programs and continuum of services to be offered to students identified as having an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) within the public school setting, requires a wide variety of educational approaches and methodologies. The special programming developed to educate students includes strategies from some of the more research- based methodologies (ABA, TEACCH, PECS, etc.). This framework of understanding of how children with ASD learn is consistent with the National Academy of Science (NAS) 2001 report which recommends “multiple methodologies” for programming for students with autism and will ensure individual programming with a focus on a student’s Individual Educational Plan (IEP) and how goals and objectives will be carried out (NRC, 2001). The psychologists at Connecticut Behavioral Health, LLC, approach teaching children with ASD from a multi-intervention approach with a behavioral emphasis. We believe in a continuum of services that make up a Multi-Intervention Teaching Approach (MITA) for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Multi-Intervention Teaching Approach (MITA) Methodologies for students identified with having an Autism Spectrum Disorder

Direct Instruction – systematic, comprehensive individualized instruction to implement educational goals and objectives
Total Communication Approach to Instruction – providing multiple frameworks for communication opportunities to improve receptive, expressive, non-verbal, and pragmatic language skills
Sensory Motor – addressing the vestibular, proprioceptive, tactile, auditory, visual, and movement needs of each student
Facilitate Play and Leisure Development – targeting both the social and communicative core deficits found in students with an Autism Spectrum Disorder
Functional Life Skills – teaching of adaptive skills students have yet to master
Parent Training – strengthening the home/school collaboration by offering training sessions on target areas of need for an individual student (e.g., behavior, visual schedules, preparing for community outings, etc.)

In Home Services

CBH In-Home Services provides families with the guidance and support necessary to help their home function more productively. CBH In-Home staff have extensive training in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). CBH uses ABA techniques as the foundation for the individualized programs that we create for our clients.

We begin by interviewing the family to obtain a complete description and history of the presenting problem. We then create a comprehensive behavioral intervention plan based on a functional analysis of the problem behavior. The behavioral plan includes proactive, preventative strategies (i.e., environmental modifications) for the family to implement as well as reactive strategies to assist the family with managing the problem behavior when it arises. Connecticut Behavioral Health, LLC is focused on creating a positive family environment and skill building. Thus, all behavior plans are reward oriented. The problem behaviors that are identified during the functional behavior analysis and family interview are reframed into positive skills that will be rewarded. This system of reinforcement teaches children productive behaviors that will result in more socially acceptable behavior. Dependent on the effectiveness of reinforcement-only plan, a reductive component to the behavior plan may be included to further manage the child’s behavior.

CBH In-Home Services provides behavioral services for children, adolescents, and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Developmental Delays, Medical Disorders, and Psychiatric/Behavioral issues.

CBH currently provides In-Home Services for The Department of Developmental Services, The Department of Children and Families, and a number of school districts throughout the state.

Pharmacotherapy

Some individuals may benefit from psychiatric medications in addition to psychotherapy. CBH clinicians understand that some individuals may be uncomfortable with the idea of using psychiatric medications in addition to psychotherapy. CBH clinicians appreciate this concern and work with their clients to educate them on the use psychiatric medications in order to ease any discomfort clients may experience. CBH clinicians work with psychiatrists, advanced practice nurse specialists, and primary care physicians to coordinate the appropriate medication related services.
