Evaluations are completed to assist families, individuals, and school personnel in designing and implementing appropriate treatment interventions. All evaluations include treatment recommendations to address the abilities and needs of each client. Recommendations may include interventions such as behavioral programs, specialized instructional services, psychotherapy, or medication treatment needs.
Child Evaluations
A comprehensive child evaluation can diagnose complicated behavioral and neuropsychological problems including:
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Pervasive Developmental Disorders
- Asperger's Syndrome
- Autism Spectrum Disorders
- Learning Disorders
As licensed psychologists, we evaluate not merely to diagnose, but to recommend school-based solutions to a child's problems. We work hand-in-hand with school Planning and Placement Teams, by conducting on-sight observations and interviews, and communicating with teachers, families, and the students academic team members.
Adult Evaluations
In addition to our evaluation services for children, we also provide testing for our adult clientele. Evaluations services for adults assess for the presence of:
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders (ADHD)
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Learning Disorders
As with our child evaluations, we provide specific treatment recommendations tailored to the abilities and needs our adult clientele.
CBH provides therapy for Children, Adolescents, Families, and Adults. CBH clinicians have received advanced training and are highly skilled in a variety of empirically based treatment modalities. CBH clinicians perform a comprehensive intake assessment during one's initial sessions and use this information to develop individualized treatment plans.
CBH provides psychological services across a variety of diagnoses, treating nearly 200 individuals and families every week.
CBH clinicians have extensive training and experience in providing family based psychotherapy. Family therapy allows individual family members the opportunity to raise and work out their concerns in a safe collaborative family environment. CBH clinicians work to ensure the absolute comfort of our clientele and thus tailor our therapy to the needs of each family.
CBH also provides group therapy for children and adolescents. Group membership is based on age, maturity, and treatment issue. Examples of group topics include: anger management, anxiety management, and social skills. Group therapy provides the client the opportunity to learn and apply specific skills in the peer-environment, an environment in which they spend a significant amount of time and where difficulties often arise.
CBH faculty collaborate with school personnel to evaluate and design behavioral and special education individualized programs. As consultants to many Connecticut school districts, CBH provides on-site training for school personnel to implement difficult behavioral modification programs, beginning with functional assessments and tiered level systems for the most difficult behavior problems. CBH also offers on-site training on child and adolescent mental health issues. Previous seminar topics have included cutting, suicide prevention, classroom behavior management, adolescent development, and anxiety management.
The development of programs and continuum of services to be offered to students identified as having an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) within the public school setting, requires a wide variety of educational approaches and methodologies. The special programming developed to educate students includes strategies from some of the more research- based methodologies (ABA, TEACCH, PECS, etc.). This framework of understanding of how children with ASD learn is consistent with the National Academy of Science (NAS) 2001 report which recommends “multiple methodologies” for programming for students with autism and will ensure individual programming with a focus on a student’s Individual Educational Plan (IEP) and how goals and objectives will be carried out (NRC, 2001). The psychologists at Connecticut Behavioral Health, LLC, approach teaching children with ASD from a multi-intervention approach with a behavioral emphasis. We believe in a continuum of services that make up a Multi-Intervention Teaching Approach (MITA) for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Multi-Intervention Teaching Approach (MITA) Methodologies for students identified with having an Autism Spectrum Disorder
Direct Instruction – systematic, comprehensive individualized instruction to implement educational goals and objectives
Total Communication Approach to Instruction – providing multiple frameworks for communication opportunities to improve receptive, expressive, non-verbal, and pragmatic language skills
Sensory Motor – addressing the vestibular, proprioceptive, tactile, auditory, visual, and movement needs of each student
Facilitate Play and Leisure Development – targeting both the social and communicative core deficits found in students with an Autism Spectrum Disorder
Functional Life Skills – teaching of adaptive skills students have yet to master
Parent Training – strengthening the home/school collaboration by offering training sessions on target areas of need for an individual student (e.g., behavior, visual schedules, preparing for community outings, etc.)

Some individuals may benefit from psychiatric medications in addition to psychotherapy. CBH clinicians understand that some individuals may be uncomfortable with the idea of using psychiatric medications in addition to psychotherapy. CBH clinicians appreciate this concern and work with their clients to educate them on the use psychiatric medications in order to ease any discomfort clients may experience. CBH clinicians work with psychiatrists, advanced practice nurse specialists, and primary care physicians to coordinate the appropriate medication related services.
